7 Signs Your Website Is Costing You Enquiries

Your website is often the first impression a potential customer gets of your business, and in a lot of cases it’s the only chance you get. If it’s slow, confusing or looks out of date, most people won’t stick around to give you the benefit of the doubt. They’ll simply hit the back button and contact the next business on the list.
The tricky part is that a website rarely breaks overnight. It slowly falls behind, and because you see it every day, it’s easy to miss. Here are seven signs your website could be quietly costing you enquiries.
1. It’s slow to load
People expect pages to load almost instantly, especially on their phones. If your homepage takes several seconds to appear, a good chunk of visitors will leave before they’ve seen what you offer. Large uncompressed images, outdated plugins and cheap hosting are the usual culprits.
2. It doesn’t work properly on mobile
Most local searches now happen on a phone. If visitors have to pinch and zoom to read your text, buttons are too small to tap, or menus don’t open properly, you’re making it hard for people to get in touch. Google also uses the mobile version of your site when deciding how to rank it, so a poor mobile experience can hurt your visibility too.
3. It’s not clear what you do or where you work
Within a few seconds of landing on your site, a visitor should know exactly what you offer, who it’s for and which areas you cover. If they have to dig through several pages to work that out, many won’t bother.
4. Contacting you takes too much effort
Long contact forms, a phone number hidden in the footer or no clear call to action on key pages all add friction. Make it easy: a visible phone number, a short enquiry form and, increasingly, the option to message you on WhatsApp can make a real difference to how many visitors actually get in touch.
5. The content is out of date
Old prices, services you no longer offer, a “latest news” section that hasn’t been touched in years or a copyright date from 2019 all send the same message: this business might not be active any more. Keeping your content current builds trust and gives search engines fresh reasons to show your site.
6. You’re not showing up in Google
A great-looking website won’t bring in enquiries if nobody can find it. If you don’t appear when people search for your services in your area, it’s often down to the basics: missing page titles, thin service pages, no location information or technical issues stopping Google from crawling the site properly. Our technical SEO checklist is a good place to start.
7. You can’t tell what’s working
If you don’t know how many people visit your site, where they come from or how many go on to enquire, you’re making decisions in the dark. Proper tracking with Google Analytics and conversion goals shows you which pages are earning their keep and which need work.
Refresh or rebuild?
Not every website with a few of these issues needs starting from scratch. Sometimes a speed clean-up, better calls to action and updated content are enough to make a noticeable difference. But if your site ticks several of these boxes, is built on an outdated platform, or simply doesn’t reflect how your business looks today, a rebuild is often the more cost-effective option in the long run.
