What Is GEO?
GEO stands for generative engine optimisation, the practice of optimising content so it’s more likely to be surfaced and cited by AI-powered search tools and chatbots, rather than just traditional search engine results pages.
As more people get answers directly from AI tools rather than clicking through a list of blue links, being the source that gets cited or summarised matters in a way that didn’t really exist a few years ago.
GEO shares a lot of common ground with good SEO: clear, well-structured, genuinely useful content, backed by credible sources, tends to perform well in both traditional search and AI-generated answers.
It’s an evolving area, and while it doesn’t replace SEO, it’s increasingly worth considering alongside it as more search behaviour shifts towards AI-assisted tools.
